This village used to have more than 80 residents, but now in 2016, they have only 3, who are all over age 70, because most of them had left to study, work, or marry. Abandoned houses are every here and there.
Kazuhiro’s grandparents were living in one of the abandoned houses, which has been unoccupied since his grandfather passed away in 2015. Kazuhiro, who lives far away from the village, visits there a couple of times a year to clean the house. One day, an idea of experiencing the village’s old lifestyle occurred to him; he detected the charcoal kiln, prepared the bath with firewood, and went to bed while hearing the sound of nature such as the insects chirping and the wave lapping onto the shore.
In Japan, population concentrations in big cities has been a longer-term social issue. While people are moving out for the sake of modern lifestyle or job opportunities, the isolated villages are literally fading out...
消えいく集落
かつて80人が住んでいたこの集落は、2016年時点で70歳を越えた3人しか住んでいない。
彼らの子どもや孫たちは、進学、就職、結婚を機に集落を離れていった。
現在は空き家がそこかしこに建ち並んでいる。
その集落の一軒に、カズヒロの祖父母は住んでいた。
2015年に祖父が亡くなり、今は空き家だ。
400km以上離れたところに住んでいる彼は、その家を掃除するため、年に数度、そこへ訪れている。
ある日、カズヒロはその集落での昔の生活を追体験したくなり、炭焼き窯の場所を探索し、薪でわかしたお風呂に入り、虫の声と波の音を聞きながら床についた一日を過ごした。
日本では、大都市圏への人口集中が問題だと叫ばれて久しい。
仕事や利便性を求め、人が離れていった結果、辺境にある集落は今まさに無くなろうとしている。
